There’s been a lot of buzz lately about hemp. Is it good? Is it bad? Is it food? Whatever your opinion, we believe that it’s worth having an open discussion about, which is why we’ve made Hemp Foods Australia our product of the month for May. Yes, this may be a slightly more controversial choice than previous months, but when it comes to our health, we’re excited to explore all avenues so that we can report back to you, our lovely customers, the cold, hard facts.
So, what is hemp? Hemp is a cannabis plant species, and before you say it, no, it’s not the same as marijuana. Hemp is different to other varieties of the plant species as it contains little or no THC (the property associated with the psychoactive symptom of marijuana). Nutritionally, hemp is a superfood. It contains massive amounts of protein, which is amazing for those vegans or vegetarians among us. It also holds the exact perfect ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 that our bodies need. As well as being packed with vitamins and minerals, hemp is often regarded as an even better alternative to flax or chia seeds.
Hemp has gained some attention lately, as the Australian government recently passed the movement to classify hemp as a legal food. An ongoing campaign came to a head at the end of April 2017 in a meeting between state and federal food ministers that determined that hemp has a low enough level of THC to be deemed fit for consumption by humans. These things take a little bit of time to come to fruition, so we can expect this motion to be finalised in November 2017.
Hemp Foods Australia is the largest Hemp Foods wholesaler, retailer, manufacturer and exporter in the Southern Hemisphere, so it would be kind of crazy to choose anyone else for our hemp-themed Product of the Month. Originally founded in the UK by Paul Banhaim, Paul expanded his hemp empire to Australia in 2000. Hemp Foods Australia is 100% Australian owned and operated and the Byron Bay facility is 100% Australian Certified Organic.
There are so many ways that you can incorporate this superfood into your everyday diet. For those of us that have never heard of hemp seeds, it’s easiest to think of them and how you can add them to your diet the same way you would flax seeds or chia seeds. Raw, hemp seeds are delicious in fresh salads, a homemade granola or even a nut mix for a snack on the go! Just sprinkle them throughout and you’ve added a boost of protein and other good stuff to your daily intake.
Add a few spoonsful of hemp seeds to your morning breakfast smoothie along with some blueberries, yoghurt and coconut milk for the perfect boost to kick off your day or as a pre-gym snack.
Blended up, hemp is amazing in a homemade pesto or dip and there are heaps of vegan recipes out there as well that hemp will work amazing in. Or even sprinkle a handful of seeds through a bread mix or a batch of apple muffins.
There are so many ways you can include Hemp Foods Australia’s products into your diet. Hemp is amazingly nutritious and the best thing is, it’s natural and organic so everyone can eat it. We look forward to November when hopefully more people can learn about the benefits of this product in your diet.
