Organic Winter Warmers

It’s easy to eat healthy and organically during the summertime when fresh fruit and vegetables are in high supply. As the weather gets colder, it becomes harder to find the same ingredients, and tastes turn towards hearty, carb-rich comfort dishes like casseroles, pasta and curries. And while Nanna’s Chicken Casserole might be super tasty – it’s probably not super healthy!

At Peaches Fresh we stock all of the ingredients necessary to give Nanna’s recipe an upgrade. We’ve scoured the internet to give you some inspiration to create delicious winter recipes using organic ingredients from our range.

The Australian Healthy Food Guide is a great resource for healthy recipes. We especially love their Simple Chicken Casserole, which can be made with our local-grown Mondo Chicken, or swapped out for our Organic Beef from Dandaragan. The best thing about casseroles is that you can add as many vegetables as you want depending on what you have on hand, and freeze the leftovers when you’re done!

Body and Soul has a whole list of comfort food that packs a nutritional punch! We are craving some of the vegetable frittata, which is a quick and easy way to get your daily dose of vegetables. Remember to use some of our Fraser Coast Cackleberry Eggs and Barambah Organic Cheese to create a healthy, tasty frittata the whole family will love!

Be sure to let us know if you’ve tried out any of these recipes, or have your own organic winter favourites. Take a photo and share it with us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

Is Organic Food REALLY better?

You will be hard pressed to find a consumer, manufacturer or farmer who will argue with the benefits of organic food. Looking at a variety of studies from the last few years, the research clearly demonstrates that organics promotes good health.

Researchers from the Newcastle University in England recently analysed 343 peer reviewed publications on organic food research to find a definitive answer to the age old question: is organic food REALLY better for you? Their answer is yes!

After gathering this research, they found that organic food contains 20-40% more antioxidants than food grown with pesticides. Antioxidants fight free radicals in your body – a nasty by product of oxidation in the body that has been linked to DNA mutations that can cause certain disease like Parkinson’s. So what does a 40% antioxidant boost mean? Well, that’s essentially like eating two extra pieces of fruit or vegetables each day but without the extra calories!

There are some who argue that the extra cost of organic food isn’t really worth it. But when you look at the statistics, you’re buying more nutritional value for less servings so if you’re comparing nutrition to servings, you could potentially be spending the same or even less on organics than you would on regularly grown food!

Potat-no!

Potatoes are a winter staple, with their warm, starchy goodness to keep you content during the cold nights. But it’s all too easy to get stuck in a potato rut. What many people don’t realise is that there are so many alternative vegetables to use in place of potato to change up your winter dinners!

1. Zucchini

Everyone loves a hearty breakfast on a chilly morning and a big breakfast is nothing without a golden hash brown. Substitute your potatoes with zucchini for a spin on a breakfast classic! With Food and Love have a tasty recipe for your mornings. See the recipe here.

2. Cauliflower

There’s something very comforting about a helping of mash potatoes – although too much can leave you in a carbohydrate coma! Mashed cauliflower is a delicious alternative. You couldn’t tell the difference, plus it’s got more of all the good stuff, like antioxidants and vitamins and less carbs! Dashing Dish have this scrumptious Whipped Cauliflower recipe for you to try tonight for dinner!

3. Parsnips

Some crunchy chips is a guilty pleasure we all indulge in from time to time. Parsnip chips roasted in the oven are a much healthier alternative! Check out Bon Appetit’s tasty treats here.

Rob’s Famous!

We’ve always listed the country of origin of all of our fresh produce. We think it’s so important to know where your food is coming from. Our customers want to know that their fruits and vegetables are grown and harvested locally. That’s why we love the new Southern Forests Initiative to label all WA fresh produce. It’s a great way to give recognition to the growers of amazing produce plus it assures our customers that their food is grown in good conditions.

Rob was recently in the West Australian talking about this new initiative. He said, “Customers will like seeing the region the food is from – with the remoteness of the area, the growing conditions in the Southern Forest region are a lot better”

What do you think of this new initiative? Head to our Facebook page and let us know!

Healthy Hot Cross Buns!

It isn’t Easter without sharing some warm, buttery hot cross buns. However, the hot cross buns you generally find in your supermarket are full of sugar, preservatives and other nasties that aren’t good for you or your family. Rather than scouring the shelves this Easter looking for a healthy alternative, why not whip up your own batch of hot cross buns!

We found a recipe that is sure to be a winner in your household from Well Nourished. What we love about this recipe is that it doesn’t use any yeast. An intolerance to yeast may not be as uncommon as you think. Some of the symptoms include fatigue, irritability, stomach cramps, trouble skin and indigestion. Cutting down yeast in your diet may help with some of these problems you’re experiencing and with this yummy recipe, you’re not sacrificing the treat. Plus, without any yeast, you don’t have to wait for these bad boys to rise, which means they’re ready to eat even faster!

Well Nourished recognizes that everyone has different dietary needs so they offer you lots of recipe tweaks to suit you! You can read her recipe for healthy hot cross buns here.

We would love to know if you’ve made these tasty treats! Make sure you snap a quick photo of your creation and share it with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Wine and Cheese? Yes Please!

Wine paired with the right Cheese can be a wonderful experience for you and your tastebuds. So we have put together a couple of suggestions for you to try now with what is the best picnic weather of the year!

A Brie cheese is creamy in texture with soft and buttery flavour is a match made in heaven with a dry and full body Chardonnay wine.

Gouda is a Dutch full flavoured cheese and is best eaten with a smooth Merlot wine. A Merlot is a delicious red variety, which is easy to drink. Yum!

A sharp Cheddar cheese is full of flavour, can be very “moreish” A cheddar is best with a sharp Cabernet Sauvignon.

The crisp and intense flavours of a Parmesan cheese will be delightful on most pallets- paired with Chianti will take your tastebuds to Tuscany. What an experience! Bellisimi!!

Blue cheese may not be to everyone’s liking, however this cheese comes to life with a Riesling.

Ricotta has such wonderful flavours, soft and delicate in its taste, it takes on an new identity when enjoyed with a Pinot Grigio.

Mozzarella, what a spectacular cheese, taste and consistency is something to be excited about. Mild in flavour, which is why when it comes to choosing a wine you cant go past a good quality Sauvignon Blanc.
